This webinar will discuss experimental and numerical investigations into the thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries conducted at IFP Energies nouvelles. First, the team established an experimental protocol to characterize thermal runaway, including the characterization of vent gases (e.g., composition), the shape of the vent gas release, and the runaway of the cell (e.g., characteristic temperatures). Using the experimental results, the team then performed 3D CFD simulations with CONVERGE for two types of battery cells of different sizes—M50LT (21 mm x 71 mm) and BAK (46 mm x 95mm)—with two different methods for representing the gasses within the cell and the ejection of the gases. The simulation results were consistent with the experimental data, demonstrating the validity of the methodology as a first step in modeling battery thermal runaway.
