In this webinar, our collaborators at IFP Energies nouvelles will describe how they used CONVERGE to define the specifications of a dedicated hydrogen direct-injection combustion system for a heavy-duty application to maximize fuel efficiency and lower raw NOx emissions. The methodology used in the study is based on the Extended Coherent Flame Model (ECFM) with Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence modeling. The new general fuel definition for ECFM, introduced in CONVERGE 4, allowed the model to be applied to this hydrogen study. In addition, a new turbulent strain function for the flame surface density equation will be presented, which allowed the researchers to improve the model predictivity. Using the boundary conditions defined through a 0D pre-study on two specified operating points (cruise and full load), 3D simulations were conducted to optimize the H2/air mixing quality and the design of the engine. Based on this optimized engine setup, experiments were carried out on a single-cylinder test bench at IFPEN. Good efficiencies were obtained, and the trends agreed well with the results from the simulation development phase.
